D'Arienzo Orquesta in Melodias Portenas
YouTube - JUAN D'ARIENZO from the film MELODIAS PORTENAS
Today appears another piece of archival video of the Juan D'Arienzo Orchestra, this time from a feature film "Melodias Portenas" (1937).
This formation of the D'Arienzo Orchestra is the classic one that revolutionized tango music starting in the late 1930s.
The person who posted this clip comments "Cuando JUAN D'ARIENZO comenzaba a despuntar su ritmo inconfundible y recibia el apodo "El Rey del Compas" acompaƱan al Maestro su cantor ALBERTO ECHAGUE y el pianista RODOLFO BIAGI........D'ARIENZO dejaba de ser "GRILLO" para ser "EL REY DEL COMPAS" !!
Loose interpretation: When Juan D'Arienzo began to (something) his unmistakable rhythm and received the nickname "The King of the Beat", he was accompanied by the singer Alberto Echague and the pianist Rodolfo Biagi. D'Arienzo stopped being "Cricket" to be "The King of the Beat".
Interestingly, the cast list (on IMDB below) also credits the composer and poet Enrique Santos Discepolo (who wrote "Uno", "Cambalache", "Yira Yira", among many other classic tango hits).
